AVID Awareness

AVID Awareness is designed for schools considering the implementation AVID or for schools refining existing AVID systems. Awareness sessions are held at AVID National Demonstration Schools in our region at both the middle and high school levels. This is an excellent opportunity to see high performing AVID schools in action, as well as ask questions and receive information about AVID. Click the link to register.

Student Success Path

Intended for teachers in elective courses such as business, computer applications, visual and performing arts and physical education. This strand demonstrates how AVID strategies and college readiness can be supported in all subject areas. Participants will be trained in strategies such as goal-setting, organization, note-taking and time management with particular focus on incorporating these college readiness skills into all classes, from athletics to choir, in both middle school and high school. $350 includes materials, continental breakfast, and lunch. Science 1

Intended for science teachers new to AVID concepts and methodologies. This strand focuses on the strategies in The Write Path Science Teacher Guide, provided to participants, which emphasizes the use of writing, inquiry, collaboration and reading (WICR) as tools for learning in the science classroom. Participants will learn how to use WICR methodologies to strengthen student processing of science content. Instruction includes techniques for implementing reading and writing-to-learn in science courses, Cornell notes, interactive notebooks, effective use of discussion, and experimental design.

History/Social Studies 1

Intended for history/social science teachers who are new to AVID concepts and methodologies. This strand focuses on the strategies from The Write Path History/Social Science Teacher Guide, provided to participants, which emphasizes the use of writing, inquiry, collaboration and reading (WICR) as tools for learning in the history/social science classroom. Participants will examine strategies for guiding students through rigorous curriculum, including techniques for teaching Cornell notes, vocabulary development, reading for understanding, writing with original thought, and oral performances.

English Language Learners (ELL)

Intended for middle level and high school teachers who teach English Language Learners in a designated second language classroom, sheltered classroom or in any content area classroom. The Write Path English Language Learners Teacher Guide, provided to participants, focuses on the use of writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading (WICR). Activities include scaffolding, academic English skills through multiple modalities, modeling, bridging, schema building, meta-cognitive development and contextualization. $350 includes materials, continental breakfast, and lunch.

Math 2

Recommended for all mathematics teachers who have taken Mathematics 1, 7-12 and are experienced with AVID methodologies. The Mathematics 2 strand will introduce additional WICR strategies and deepen participants’ understanding of AVID methodologies practiced in Mathematics 1. The focus of the strand will be on ensuring that all students gain access to rigorous instruction through active and engaging activities. Mathematics 2 is organized to reinforce and strengthen vertical team articulation. $350 includes materials, continental breakfast, and lunch. (Click on link to register)

Intended for mathematics teaches new to AVID concepts and methodologies. This strand focuses on the strategies in the Write Path I Mathematics Teacher Guide, provided to participants, which emphasizes the use of writing, inquiry, collaboration and reading (WICR) as tools for learning in the mathematics classroom. Participants will learn how to use WICR methodologies to support student learning.

English/Language Arts 2

Intended for English Language Arts teachers who have previously attended English/Language Arts 1. Principally designed for English teachers teaching grades 11 and 12, it focuses on strategies from The Write Path English Language Arts 2 Teacher Guide, provided to participants, with the primary focus on critical reading and writing, and developing students' work habits and high-level thinking skills. Participants will examine strategies for scaffolding students through rigorous curriculum with an emphasis on AVID’s college readiness goal.

English/Language Arts 1

Intended for English Language Arts teachers who are new to AVID concepts and methodologies. It focuses on strategies from The Write Path English Language Arts 1 Teacher Guide, provided to participants, with the primary focus on critical reading for meaning that includes the following steps: Plan for reading, Pre-Read, Build vocabulary, Interact with text, and Extend beyond the text. Writing, inquiry, and collaboration are included as tools for developing critical reading skills across genres.
