About AVID
AVID was founded by Mary Catherine Swanson in 1980 at Clairemont High School in San Diego. The first AVID program outside of San Diego county was implemented in Riverside at Ramona high School in 1988. Currently RIMS AVID has AVID elective classes at 183 schools (97 middle schools and 86 high schools) with over 25,000 students enrolled.

- 87.5% of seniors completed A-G requirements;
- 94.2% of seniors took the SAT or ACT;
- 56% took at least one AP exam;
- 81% were accepted to a 4-year college;
- 23% were accepted by UC;
- 72% were accepted by CSU.
- 64.6% of AVID 8th graders completed H.S. Algebra;
- 17.1% of AVID 8th graders completed at least one Honors course other than Algebra;
- 87.1% of AVID 8th graders enrolled in a complete sequence of college preparatory courses upon entering high school.
Student Profile
AVID student selection criteria include:
- Students with GPA's between 2.0 and 3.5 the year before they are selected for an AVID program;
- Students who sustain scores average and above;
- Students who may be the first in their family to go to college;
- Students who qualify for free/reduced lunch;
- Students who are traditionally underserved in four-year colleges.
AVID Essentials include:
- An academic elective class (grades 6-12) that is part of the regular school day;
- All students are enrolled in rigorous college prep curriculum (A-G courses);
- A framework of support structures are in place that enables students to become competitive in college application process;
- Classroom tutorials with AVID trained tutors;
- AVID course curriculum based on Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration and Reading (WICR).
